AUGUSTO RIGHI   Bologna 1850-Bologna 1920

After he graduated in civil engineering in 1872,he succeeded Pacinotti and taught  Physics at the "Technical Institute" in Bologna from 1873 to 1880. From 1880 to 1885 he worked as a teacher in Palermo where Orso Mario Corbino was one of his students. He moved to Padova where he lived until 1889, later he was professor at Bologna  University.

In 1893 Augusto Righi started working at his greatest experimental  work, "The study of the electromagnetic property".   At that time Marconi attended his course and he was allowed to use the  laboratory and the library too. Their work marked the birth of wireless telegraphy. During the last year of his career Augusto Righi started working at ionic-electromagnetic radiations phenomenon.

He was  candidated a  number of times for Nobel Prize

Augusto Righi devoted his life to scientific physics research.           He studied the Hall and Kerr effect, carried out experiments on  light polarisation by means of transparent objects placed in a magnetic field. Moreover he studied  the diffusion of electric charges in gases, observed the ionisation of the air produced by X rays and  the magnetic hysteresis.

He was mainly interested in electric oscillations and  electromagnetic waves.                                                                        He built an oscillator for decimetric waves  reproducing and observing the main phenomena of  geometrical optics and  physical optics. He proved the  connection between electromagnetic phenomenon and optical phenomenon confirming the Maxwell theory.

His masterpiece:' Optics of Electric Oscillation' (Bologna 1897)
